A pedestrian was struck and killed by a fire department vehicle that was heading to a call early Monday evening in Clearwater, Florida.
Assistant Chief Marvin Pettingill was driving a fire department Chevy Suburban with emergency lights and sirens activated at the time of the crash, according to a report from the local ABC affiliate (http://bit.ly/zBXKrq). Pettingill was not injured in the incident. He did not see the pedestrian until right before impact and was unable to avoid the collision.
Although there is no indication that the emergency vehicle operator was at fault in this situation, driving and getting safely to calls still remains a dangerous part of the firefighter's profession.
