The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports 8 confirmed cases of swine flu infection in humans have occurred in San Diego and Imperial Counties (California) and San Antonio (Texas). There are reports of multiple reports from Central Mexico of human infection with the same virus. CDC has issued guidance for clinicians on infection control and antiviral treatment for patients with suspected swine influenza, posted on their Web site at www.cdc.gov/flu/swine/recommendations.htm.
The U.S. infections are a type A influenza virus H1N1 which does not appear to have been transmitted from pigs but rather through human-to-human spread. Symptoms have been mild and typical of influenza illness. All patients have had fever accompanied by upper respiratory illness, cough, runny nose, sore throat, and headache. Some have experience gastrointestinal illness.
This is a developing situation. The CDC will issue additional information and guidance as their investigation progresses.
