
In what may be a major shift in federal firefighting strategy, federal firefighters this wildfire season are focusing on rescuing severely injured colleagues and removing them from fire areas within an hour, according to a report from the Scripps Howard News Service. This new focus may be the result of the death of rookie firefighter Andy Palmer during a wildland fire in California two years ago. A recent memo by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group has recommended, among other things, improving medical responses during wildfires.
