People who participated in the rescue, recovery and clean-up of the World Trade Center face an impending deadline to register their service with the New York State Workers' Compensation Board, preserving their right to future workers' compensation benefits.

The estimated 60,000 people who worked on World Trade Center operations have until September 11, 2010, to file the eight-question form, the WTC-12. The New York State Workers' Compensation Board is launching a major campaign to reach everyone who did this duty, including the many volunteer firefighters who rushed to the city during that time.

Regardless of where they reside, volunteer firefighters should file a WTC-12, the form that tells the Board the dates and places of their service, to remain eligible for benefits.

Most people who worked on World Trade Center operations between Sept. 11, 2001 and Sept. 12, 2002, at any of these locations are eligible for inclusion in this list.

  • The World Trade Center site. This is anywhere below a line starting from
       the Hudson River and Canal Street; east on Canal Street to Pike Street;
       south on Pike Street to the East River; and extending to the lower tip
       of Manhattan.
  • The Fresh Kills Landfill.
  • The barges between the west side of Manhattan and the Fresh Kills Landfill.
  • The New York City morgue, and the temporary morgues on the West Side Piers.

The Board's national campaign-Tell us you were there-will reach the employees and volunteers who participated in the rescue, recovery and clean-up of the World Trade Center. The centerpieces are radio and television public service announcements featuring retired New York Yankee great Bernie Williams, in both English and Spanish. There is also direct outreach to self-identified workers and the employers of workers.

For more information, or to get a form, people should call 1-877-WTC12-08, or visit www.WTC12.org. Firehouses can also request posters.
