The FDA declared an end to shortages of dextrose 50% and epinephrine preload emergency syringes, two of most in-demand EMS pharmaceuticals. Prolonged shortages, lasting most of 2010, affected not only EMS, but all facets of the healthcare system. Many shortages continue, and this prompted four leading healthcare groups to meet in November 2010 with the FDA, manufacturers, and suppliers to discuss the drug shortage problem. Solutions proposed include improved communication between the supply chain and users, elimination of FDA barriers to manufacturing that may result in shortages, and clarification of FDA terminology that defines when manufacturers must report a shortage. Drug shortages are currently at an all time high, and are not only frustrating providers but directly resulting in harm to patients.
