New Detroit (MI) Fire Department Policy to Responding to Fires at Vacant

The Detroit (MI) Fire Department is changing its policy on fire response at vacant buildings to better protect firefighters, according to a report on clickondetroit.com. This change comes in the wake of a fire at a vacant commercial building in August 2010 that caused a wall collapse that injured six firefighters.

Detroit Fire Commissioner Donald Austin said normal procedures had firefighters entering every building they responded to as a precaution. But now, according to Austin, firefighters will only go into a burning building if there's a clear indication that someone is inside.
