Lessons of 9/11 Lead to Development of Innovative Disaster Training Simulator

The tragedy of 9/11 made clear that anything other than real-life training is not an acceptable strategy for search and rescue preparedness. Ten years after that fateful day, our nation’s first responders still find themselves hindered by the limited opportunities to receive vital real-life-experience training required to deal with such crisis situations – until now.

Personal Protection Equipment Specialists’ (PPES) GUARDIAN Safety and Survival Training Simulator, which just recently received full patent protection, affords first-responders the opportunity to build teamwork, master skills and explore seemingly endless scenarios that their life-saving work will encounter. Whether affiliated with FEMA Urban Search & Rescue operations, terrorist task forces, Federal law enforcement, emergency medical service providers or local firefighting companies, these men and women can now get the real-life experience they will encounter in a safe and startlingly authentic environment.

The GUARDIAN Safety and Survival Training Simulator was designed and developed by Tom Quinn, who experienced firsthand the effects of the limited training in place 10 years ago during the 9/11 rescue efforts. After providing critical support services to the dedicated men and women working through the rubble of Ground Zero, Quinn returned home determined to find a safe way to better prepare first-responders who put their lives on the line for others. The result was a unique and innovative mobile training simulator, able to recreate over 200 catastrophic scenarios that first responders will likely encounter. Now the effects of disasters, both man-made and natural, can be experienced in a controlled environment, including the results of earthquakes, explosions, cave-ins and fires. Trainees will find themselves having to crawl through two levels of narrow spaces of a pancaked building on a mission to rescue a trapped victim, while acquiring hands-on experience in perfecting necessary techniques in stabilizing collapsed environments, shoring up flooring and/or gas leaks, and accessing, lifting and extricating victims from life-threatening environments. Hindered by limited visibility, smoke and debris, and encumbered by pounds of protective gear and bulky breathing apparatus, trainees learn the essential value of teamwork and strategizing under conditions that have been referred to as being "as real as it gets."
