In August, 2009, a fire prevention DVD producer began holding daily drawings to give away public education DVDs. According to the firm, The Idea Bank, it was a way to help some of its fire department clients who were struggling with budget shortfalls. The gesture struck a chord. Within three weeks, morethan twelve hundred fire educators had registered online to win the daily drawing.
"We were shocked by the huge response in that first year," says the firm's president, Richard Lambert, who adds, "Dozens of people continue to sign up every week." The Idea Bank's daily drawings were scheduled to end in October that first year, but Lambert says they decided to keep them going. By theend of 2011, the firm says more than 500 DVDs will have been won by fire department public educators in the U.S. and Canada.
