Veteran staffers on the House and Senate energy and appropriations committees reportedly ran an office pool in which employees tried to guess how many acres were burned by wildland fires each year.
No money changed hands in the game, according to a report on a Washington Post news blog (http://wapo.st/wsqiwH), but winners were "crowned" in the annual contests.
Wildland firefighters are angered by the existence of the pool, with one Federal Wildland Fire Service Association citing the high number of firefighter and civilian fatalities and destruction caused by wildfires in Western states every year.
The contest has been reportedly stopped.
