Cigarette Sparked Macys Fire

A lit cigarette that had been carelessly discarded caused the fire at Macy's flagship store in New York City, reports city fire marshals.

The New York Times details that the cigarette burned through silicone caulking between the sidewalk and the building. It then fell into the subbasement and ignited debris.

Roughly 80 firefighters and 25 Fire Department vehicles responded to the scene. The building was evacuated but no injuries were reported.
