Mobile Firefighters Offer Tips After Fireplace Fire Spread to Home

The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department (AL) is sharing some tips after a fire in a fireplace spread to an attic and caused $20,000 in damage, reports Alabama.com. The fire had initially been started in the fireplace for warmth, but investigators determined it spread because there was a small gap between the fireplace and the interior wall. The following tips include: Be sure [your fireplace] is installed properly. Have the chimney inspected annually and cleaned if necessary, especially if it has not been used for some time. Do not use flammable liquids to start or accelerate any fire. Keep glass or [a] metal screen in front of the fireplace opening to prevent embers or sparks from jumping ...
