Three-Alarm Fire Devastated Syracuse Star's Home

A devastating three-alarm fire that left the Hamilton home of Syracuse Orange point guard and Sports Illustrated coverboy Michael Carter-Williams uninhabitable started in the chimney, reports the Boston Herald.

"It's just a tragedy at any level," Hamilton Deputy Fire Chief Kirby Brand told the Herald. "We had the state Fire Marshal's Office in and they're pretty comfortable that it was an accident."

Firefighters from 10 North Shore communities raced to assist Hamilton firefighters.

Brand said there were people home at the time. The fire raged even as Carter-Williams, 21, a Syracuse University sophomore majoring in communications, was helping lead the Orangemen to victory over the California Golden Bears in the NCAA March Madness tournament -- with his mom looking on from the stands.

Heavy fire and smoke in the attic and around the chimney of the 15-year-old, four-bedroom Colonial twice forced firefighters out of the building as they fought the flames.
