Nowadays, we may take for granted the value of firefighters exchanging ideas and opinions at training workshops and conventions like this week's Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC). But it may not have always been so obvious.

In a Roundtable column from the July 10, 1929 issue of Fire Engineering, the editors asked for readers' opinions on whether fire department conferences were worthwhile, and got a range of replies from fire chiefs around the country, from Waterbury, Connecticut, to Paducah, Kentucky, and Napa, California.
