Safety and Health Week: Saving Our Own is an Inside Job

It’s International Fire/EMS Safety & Health Week! This week is a joint initiative of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) to encourage departments to focus on important safety and health issues. This year the focus is on behavioral health, and we want to remind all firefighters and emergency personnel that Saving Our Own is an Inside Job.

Taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health. This year’s theme reflects the importance of emergency responders taking responsibility for their own and each others’ mental and physical well-being. There are many resources to help you focus on behavioral health this week and throughout the year on the Safety and Health Week web site at www.safetyandhealthweek.org.

The NVFC has partnered with L&T Health and Fitness to host four free webinars this week on different behavioral health topics. Register for these live sessions at https://nvfc.webex.com.

Monday's Webinar: Brotherhood vs. Parenthood ‒ Finding your Life Balance

1pm EDT

Today’s free webinar looks at the roles a volunteer firefighter plays throughout their lives, from employee to spouse to parent to firefighter. How do you emphasize the purpose, importance, and balance of each of these roles? This webinar will help you with time management, strategies for prioritizing each aspect of your life, and finding a balance between all these roles.

Don't forget, the Fire Service Safety and Health Sweepstakes Quiz ends tomorrow! Test your knowledge with 15 questions relating to firefighter health and safety for your chance to win a challenge coin. The quiz is sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association in partnership with the IAFC and NVFC. Take the quiz now at www.nfpa.org/fireservicequiz.
