QUESTION: In your department, what qualifies or disqualifies a line firefighter as it pertains to health? How do you deal with insulin-dependent vs. noninsulin-dependent diabetic firefighters?MOST OF US COME TO work when we don’t feel 100 percent. Colds, flu, and other maladies as well as minor injuries aren’t enough to keep us away from the station. Where, however, should we draw the line concerning the effect these conditions have on the firefighter’s ability to perform his duties? Is there a line?
