Why didn't the FDNY adopt aerial ladders until the late 1880s? Scroll down for the answer.
It was shocked by the Scott-Uda prototype aerial ladder collapse tragedy at Tweed Plaza on September 14, 1875. The collapse killed Chief William Nash and two firefighters.
