Drill Of The Week: Company Level Drill - Ladder Rescue

NFPA 1500 (2002 edition) calls for the establishment of an annual proficiency evaluation for all members of the department. These proficiencies are to be determined and established by each juristiction and are specific to each job position within the department. Once established, each member will be responsible for maintaining these skill levels. Annual evaluations will be conducted to validate the ability to perform these skills. These evaluations are designed to validate competency in basic skill levels as well as identify opportunities for training at both the individual and company level.
This week's drill involves the following skills: Ladder carries, ladder raises, placement of ladders, removal of unconscious victims down ground ladders, tying halyard, all leading up to performing a ladder rescue.
Starting with the apparatus from 100' from the building, a crew of three will carry, and raise the assigned ground ladder to the third floor balcony. The carry/raise will be flat shoulder, and perpendicular to the building. Once the ladder is properly placed a rescue of an unconscious victim from the window down the ladder must be accomplished. Time will start when the ladder comes off the apparatus and end when the victim is on ground level.
