Corbett's Trivia

Middle

Q: In the 19th Century, did the use of metal "fire marks" on buildings in mean that only fire companies associated with the insurance company that issued the mark would put the fire out? Scroll down for the answer.

A: No, this is a myth that originated in the 20th Century and has been erroneously repeated until this day (including in current firefighter training books). Although insurance companies would in some cases contribute funds to fire companies, fire companies themselves put out the fire whether or not the building was insured.
