A. Probably since the first caveman lit the first stick of wood on fire.


However, a New York City group called the "Ancient Order of Buffs, Inc.", in existence during the early 1900's, claimed to have a member who began attending fires in 1868, three years after the initiation of the paid New York City Fire Department. The Order ws limited to 10 members and was composed of well-to-do businessmen.
