Drill of the Week: Size-up questions

Middle

Proper size-up of the fireground is everyone's job. In most cases, the engine company will arrive first, so this session will focus on decision making by the first-in engine company. Each member of the company needs to complete a personal size-up based on their assignment on the fireground.

Size-up allows the company to estimate hoseline stretches, fire location, identification of potential victims and many other operational factors. Size-up is said to be an ongoing process that means you can re-evaluate your decisions based on new facts and observations. Always anticipate what could happen next and make your decisions based on firefighter safety and worst case possibility. Review the following size-up questions for each role and responsibility. Use your department's procedures for performing size-up when answering these questions.
