APCO seeks comments on draft wireless 911 deployment and management practices
The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International released a candidate American National Standard (ANS) of effective practices for deploying and managing wireless 911. The Wireless 9-1-1 Deployment and Management Effective Practices Guide is designed to increase the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) managers' understanding of the technology application and the ability to better manage wireless calls, as well as public and responder expectations. The Effective Practices are a result of Project LOCATE's wireless accuracy testing, which was started in 2005 and reported on in 2007.
"APCO has found that there continues to be a clear public expectation that first responders will have consistent and accurate location information delivered with all wireless 911 calls, causing frustration between callers, call takers and field personnel when things don't go as planned," APCO International President Willis Carter said. "APCO's Project LOCATE hopes to close this gap through these effective practices, created from discussions with wireless service providers about the wireless accuracy testing results, trends, and anomalies realized during this project."
There is a 45-day public review and comment period for this draft standard, beginning May 9 and ending June 23. The Candidate ANS can be downloaded as a PDF HERE.
