South Carolina issues proclamation for National Campus Fire Safety Month

Middle

South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford has signed a proclamation recognizing September as Campus Fire Safety Month, joining with 11 other states that include:

  • Florida

  • Illinois

  • Kentucky

  • Maine

  • Nebraska

  • North Carolina
  • Pennsylvania

  • Rhode Island

  • Virginia

  • Washington

  • Wisconsin

These proclamations are in response to a letter co-signed by 18 parents who lost children in campus-related fires that was sent to all fifty governors and the District of Columbia. In 2007, 30 states issued proclamations along with the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate and a number of campuses across the country held education and outreach programs.

The launch of National Campus Fire Safety Month will take place in Washington, DC on Capitol Hill on September 9, 2008. Congressional co-sponsors for this event are Congressman Bill Pascrell and Congresswoman Tubbs Jones and over 40 national fire safety organizations have signed on as supporters. An online map of the states and the proclamations is available and more information can be found at www.CampusFireSafetyMonth.org.
