Drills 2004 pg. 1

  • Drill of the Week: Arson Investigation
The way we proceed with our job can impact these investigations--unknowingly destroying the evidence required to prove the fire was not unintentionally set, for example.
  • Drill of the Week: Explosive Devices
All participants of the drill will be made aware of the procedures to follow once a suspected explosive device has been reported.
  • Drill of the Week: Ropes and Knots
We often think of ropes and knots in connection with specialized rescue scenarios. But we've all been taught how to use rope to perform basic tasks on the fireground.
  • Drill of the Week: Fractures
We do not all run with EMS units; however, most if not all of us have received some first-aid training, and at any time we could be called on to administer such aid to a fallen firefighter on the fireground or a civilian victim in a confined-space rescue scenario.
  • Drill of the Week: Drowning Response, Ice Rescue
The objective of this week's drill is to learn what actions to take at the scene of a reported drowning, both prior to the arrival of the dive team and in support of the dive team.
  • Drill of the Week: Cold Weather Emergencies
Cold weather emergencies don't necessarily have to involve civilians. In the dead of winter, one of our own could suffer from cold-related injuries on the fireground. This drill reviews the protocols and procedures for treating injuries and illnesses associated with cold weather.
  • Drill of the Week: Multiple-Casualty Incidents
This week's drill includes several scenarios: a school bus accident, a bleacher collapse at a little league softball field, and a collapse of merchandise racks at a local store (supermarket, furniture, warehouse-type, etc.).
  • Drill of the Week: Ventilation
Members will inspect various venting tools including power saws and will get some hands-on practice using them. Members will also practice using a backup person on the roof--someone who is watching out for the firefighter making the cuts.
  • Drill of the Week: Roof Operations
Specifically, the drill covers procedures for getting on and off roofs, for moving around on sloped roofs, for evaluating the stability of a roof structure, and for fine-tuning emergency procedures in case you become trapped on a roof.
  • Drill of the Week: Soft Tissue and Penetrating Wounds
Objectives of this drill include practicing the techniques for bandaging injuries and reviewing the protocols for application of the pneumatic antishock garment. Basic first aid skills should be part of your repertoire.
