CA fire districts to train 35 Mexican firefighters

May 8--Thirty-five firefighters from Mexico are scheduled to be in the Sacramento area in the fall as part of the Bombero Program, a partnership between firefighters in the United States and Mexico, according to Cosumnes Community Services District spokesman Steve Capps.

The Cosumnes fire department will train 10 of the firefighters at its training facility. They will be housed in district fire stations. Other fire departments in the Sacramento region also will provide housing and training.

Tax-deductible donations to help defray the cost of travel, training, meals and other expenses are being accepted through the Cosumnes Community Services District Foundation.

A $350 donation to "Adopt-A-Bombero" will sponsor a trip to Northern California for a Mexican firefighter. Smaller donations also will be accepted.

Mexican firefighters, who will take the training back to their own fire departments, depend on private assistance and volunteers during their time in the area.

To "Adopt-A-Bombero," mail a tax-deductible check or money order payable to the Cosumnes Community Services District Foundation at: Cosumnes CSD Fire Department c/o Bomberos Program, 8812 Elk Grove Blvd., Elk Grove, CA 95624.
