Woman Injured Seriously As She Fought Fire That Killed Three Pets

By Anchorage Daily News, Alaska

Oct. 29--An early morning fire in Turnagain Heights sent a woman to the hospital with serious injuries, killed three pets and significantly damaged a single-family home, according to the Anchorage Fire Department. The fire at 2900 Barbara Drive, near Turnagain Street and 29th Avenue, was reported about 5:15 a.m. Wednesday. Firefighters arriving on scene found the woman, who was not identified, already outside the ranch home trying to fight the fire with a garden hose, Battalion Chief Bridget Bushue said. Flames were bursting out windows and doors.

"Flames were shooting out," Bushue said. "It was really burning."

The woman, the only occupant of the home, suffered serious smoke inhalation and possibly other injuries in the fire and was transported code red to a hospital, according to firefighters. A bird -- perhaps a parrot or cockatiel -- a small cat and a Pomeranian dog died in the fire.

The fire was burning in the open in the small home and firefighters from the Spenard, Downtown and Tudor stations were able to knock it down fast, Bushue said.

"The crews got there really quick and they basically just blasted it," Bushue said.

The fire was under control at about 5:35 a.m., though it smoldered for some time. It started in a living room area, which was equipped with a wood-burning stove, though Bushue said it appeared the stove was not the fire's source. The cause of the fire was under investigation but firefighters said it did not appear suspicious.

Firefighters estimated damage to the home to be at least $80,000.
