Firefighter Injured in Kent

By Ed Meyer, The Akron Beacon Journal, Ohio

Nov. 2--KENT --A firefighter suffered a minor injury while fighting a house fire from a Halloween party that carried into Sunday morning in the 600 block of East Crain Avenue, authorities said.

Meanwhile, Kent police made 63 arrests, most for misdemeanors in connection with disorderly conduct and underage drinking, during the city's annual downtown Halloween party.

Police Sgt. Jim Prusha said there was no estimate of how many people attended the party, but there were times when downtown traffic could not move because of the number of people in the streets.

One felony arrest was reported. Ryan Hill, 22, of Chagrin Falls, was accused of disorderly conduct. When he was taken to the city jail, he allegedly broke a jail showerhead and was charged with felony vandalism, a police dispatcher said.

The fire was reported at 4:31 a.m. Sunday in a two-story, single-family home at 605 E. Crain. When firefighters arrived, flames were shooting out of the rear of the home, a fire official said.

Everybody in the house was able to escape, and there were no reports of injuries except to the unidentified firefighter. He was treated at the scene by paramedics, fire Lt. Bill Myers said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, he said. There was extensive damage to the home but no cost estimate as of Sunday evening.

Crews from Streetsboro, Stow, Ravenna, Ravenna Township, Mantua and Aurora also responded to the fire, Myers said.

The number of arrests from the party was slightly below last year, when Kent police reported 67. Ed Meyer can be reached at 330-996-3784 or emeyer@thebeaconjournal.com.
