BRIEF: Blaze damages home, displaces couple: Electric heater pinpointed as cause of fire

By Cumberland Times News, Md.

Nov. 5--MCCOOLE -- A Westernport Road couple was left homeless by an accidental fire that broke out in their residence shortly before 9 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office.

Vance and Kim Jessie were not at home when the 8:42 a.m. incident occurred at their residence at 24405 Westernport Road. Vance Jessie had left earlier in the morning and Kim Jessie was walking their dog at the time of the fire.

Deputy Fire Marshal Ryan Chapman determined the fire originated in a bedroom of the residence and was caused by a faulty electric portable heater.

Damages to the couple's single-story dwelling were estimated at $30,000 with an additional $30,000 loss to its contents.

Fire officials said smoke alarms inside the residence were activated.

The victims are reportedly staying with friends and family and were provided initial assistance by the American Red Cross.

More than three dozen volunteer firefighters responded following 911 calls to emergency centers in Allegany and Mineral counties. The fire was discovered by a neighbor.

Potomac, McCoole, New Creek, Midland and Barton volunteer fire companies responded along with Tri-Towns Rescue Squad.
