GUIDELINES FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS

Fire Engineering and fireEMS appreciate your photo submissions. They are an important tool in our mission to educate firefighters and EMS personnel. Please consider the following with respect to photo submissions:
  • Submit color slides or color prints (any size).
  • Cover photo submissions must be vertically oriented.
  • Do not submit negatives.
  • Submit electronic photos and art in the following format set up for a MAC:
    • Image Resolution: 300 DPI (dots per inch)
    • Mode: CMYK color
    • File Format: EPS, TIFF, or JPEG
    • Submission Format: regular computer disk, ZIP disk, CD, or e-mail.
    • E-mail photos, however, should be made as small as possible.
    • Otherwise, they may be difficult to download.
    • All electronic submissions must follow this format, or they will not be accepted!
  • Include complete contact information (name, address, telephone/fax/cell numbers, e-mail).
  • Brief description of the incident (a page or less)
  • Number each photo and include:
    • Complete descriptive caption
    • Complete photo credit information
  • Submit photos of firefighters performing specific firefighting and EMS operations. Generally, we publish photos that show firefighters in action and avoid such photos as apparatus parked in front of fully involved structures; however, we are interested in "inanimate" photos that specifically illustrate a point of unique interest to firefighters and EMS personnel (such as a new building construction method that poses a significant safety threat to responders under fire conditions). We are also interested in dramatic events (a high-rise fire, a building collapse, gas explosions, natural disasters, EMS response, etc.) around which we could build a report or description.

In general: DO submit photos of firefighters advancing hoselines into structures; firefighters actively involved in water supply; forcible entry operations; horizontal and vertical ventilation operations; vehicle extrication; rescue operations; EMS operations and significant events that contain lessons for firefighters and EMS personnel throughout the country.

Please remember: Fire Engineering and fireEMS are training magazines; we choose our photos carefully to underscore training lessons.

  • When using slide film, you may wish to submit high-quality duplicates.
  • Please be patient during the review process. We have a small staff, and a careful review takes time.
  • Please indicate in your letter if we can keep your photos in our files (six months to a year) to possibly use as the need arises.
  • We compensate photographers for published material two to three weeks after date of issue. We do not compensate for photos that are not published.
  • Under normal circumstances, we do not pay kill or holding fees.

Send photo submissions and queries to Diane Feldman, Fire Engineering/fireEMS, 21-00 Route 208 South, Fair Lawn, NJ 07410. Telephone: (800) 962-6484, ext. 5047. E-mail: dianef@pennwell.com.
