Recognize the team, not just the individual

Fri, Jan 1, 1999 Firefighters tend not to blow their own horns, especially when it comes to "heroic acts." The attitude is, Let the deeds speak for themselves; if recognition comes, fine, but otherwise, it was "just doin` the job." The world in which we ply our trade is complex and demands that we advance and adapt our products to meet the needs of today`s rescue consumer. The fire service has responded and embraced new rescue technologies, adapted approaches, and invented a couple of things of our own. These le

Approach all incidents with caution

Sun, Mar 1, 1998 This refers to "A Routine Call Becomes a Close Call" by Larry Collins (Fire Engineering, October 1997). This well-written article is a prime example of the reason we, as emergency responders, must always approach an incident with the utmost care and caution. The incident cited could have been a disaster for all involved: responders and the civilian. That it turned out as well as it did shows how well the responders were trained and [how appropriately they] acted.

INDUSTRIAL ENGULFMENT RESCUE CONSIDERATIONS BY ROBERT RHEA

Sat, Nov 1, 1997 The information presented here will assist rescue teams in evaluating the hazards present and in developing tactics and methods for performing rescue operations at surface mining facilities, industrial complexes, and other potential engulfment accident sites. A variety of potential rescue scenarios exist at these facilities. Because you can find such facilities in most response areas or surrounding mutual-aid jurisdictions, you will need additional information and training on this subject.

RESPONDING TO JUMPER INCIDENTS

Wed, May 1, 1996 It is 2300 hours, and your department is dispatched to an "attempted suicide" at an area hotel. Dispatch informs you that a male is threatening to jump from a fifth-floor window. On arrival, you find that a man has broken out the plate glass windows of his room. He now dangles precariously from the window by one arm, bleeding profusely, shouting and acting highly irrationally. In addition, he is wielding a large shard of glass and alternately menaces your crew and cuts his wrists and neck. How

Smooth-bore nozzles

Mon, Jan 1, 1996 Thanks for the informative article on the smooth-bore nozzles. Our company has been a proponent of these tools for several years now. We switched in 1992 to 1516-inch tips on 134-inch and to 114-inch on 212-inch from automatic nozzles. We were criticized when we switched and still are. We were told we want to be like "the big city," but when you ask the critics why they like combination automatics, their only answer is, you need fog to protect yourself. I think you addressed what true nonsense t

CONCRETE CUTTING SAWS

Fri, Sep 1, 1995 Rescuers face many challenges when operating at incidents involving concrete. Making access by moving or penetrating concrete is a formidable task. Generally, one cubic foot of 4,000-psi reinforced concrete weighs about 150 pounds. Simple math tells us that any substantial section of concrete will be too heavy to move, even by modern-day body-building rescuers.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT FOR SPECIALIZED RESCUE

Wed, Mar 1, 1995 In my last article (January 1995), I spoke about specialized training and its major role as the foundation of the fire service. Most likely, I will get some arguments concerning what some consider an equally important part of the fire service--tools and equipment--and how they play an important role in our daily firefighting and rescue operations.
