In this extrication video, Dave Dalrymple shows you how to use a power hydraulic ram to expand crumpled vehicle compartments to more easily disentangle patients. Sponsored by Holmatro.
Welcome rescuers to fire engineering training minutes on -- apple. What we're -- -- talking about today is a technique called cross ramming. Now maybe someone -- -- not familiar with cross ramming -- familiar with our -- the power hydraulic program. We've always use the -- to -- to displace a dash. Push it forward -- -- up out of our way so you're used to using ram in that way. However maybe you're not used to. And think about it the public's eyes of -- -- today. Lot of times vehicles today because of their -- the design vehicles want to absorb energy they kind of crushing it damaged. In -- compressed towards the passenger's cell. What happens when that -- Either from -- side impact. In in -- into the passenger's cell. Or because of the severity of damage actually entries into the past yourself in front of the -- Many times our patients will be trapped. In different ways and what we're used to or might actually need to -- proportion pushed the car back out. So to speak. And one of the best tools to use that is our friend the power hydraulic ram now we're gonna show -- a couple different ways to explore this today. Why not only pushing the vehicle out. Horizontally. But also vertically. And from a couple different positions and we'll show you how this can help you access and doesn't -- the patient. Better. And safer. And rescuers want things to remember any -- -- working around -- post or the roof itself. We always need to -- the interior of the vehicle now part of that prepping job is gonna be cutting seat belts and displacing interior trim -- war. Air -- cylinders. I and other stressed there is also. To protect the patient who inserted a piece of -- protection in that area between the patient where the rescuers doing work. You see is displaced the interior trim away there's no airbags Saunders there. He's also looking because of -- being at the beach post itself he's going to be looking for the adjustable seatbelt bracket. Now rescuers as part of the cross -- evolution we need to actually -- the ram in place. Now what we need to do is we need to figure out the distance we want to travel. What -- we have we will need to make sure that we blocked each -- of the ramp just think about the point of contact. The ram actually makes the ram makes a very small. Point of contacts -- meg gonna need to wipe that out either with craving or with -- ram jam word or some other device like that. Now rescuers you can see the -- -- in the ram is in place they've extended out. -- and I began -- -- ramming evolution itself now think about what as the ram extends and starts to move the vehicle. We need to watch the ram itself we need to watch our patient. So -- none of the vehicle parts itself comes back on for the patient. As we take our time we might need to reposition the ram. Either higher or lower on that -- folks. The program to do this -- Is a telescoping Graham where you can fit it into a tight space -- will extend farther out. And almost set piece ram so if you had a telescope -- ram in your arsenal let's include school choice here. -- rescuers. One of the things that you'll notice we've had to readjust the ramp -- sometimes and we need to readjust their and we also need to build up space especially if we have a short ram and we need to go. A longer distance. Alan nice thing you notice we've used our platforms from our quick -- In there behind the ram -- and a wedge. So not only are they good for stabilizing the vehicle on its wheels you also can utilize them for taking up space to insert -- Iran. Now as as they extend the ram. This time. And push the vehicle out. We have our our our protection in place. To protect our patient. And our interior -- -- We have to also watch we're gonna reach a certain point where the -- posting leaked out and it's gonna start removes the roof down. Which then we'll stop. And every position -- ram actually push the roof off. Now rescuers. As we've pushed the -- noticed of them the roof itself has started to calm down that's that's a normal. Situation that's gonna happen as we pushed aside the vehicle act we're gonna need to reposition the ram the -- the roof up vertically. Now cross ramming whether it's. Vertically or horizontally if we need to make sure we change we are talking to our interior -- where. To coordinate the efforts between the ram and patient management as we work. Rescuers. Now we finished pushing the side of the vehicle -- across ramming horizontally. Our across -- the vehicle vertically by pushing the -- up with the ram. -- rescuers now we've reposition a -- to cross ram vertically. You -- we've placed hard protection both between the patient. And also the lower part of the -- would put some -- in place to ensure that the ram doesn't slide forward. Now you'll also notice. Regardless of whether or across ramming vertically or horizontally. Always want to support the ram. So he always supported the ram at the base to spread the base along the floor. So we can actually employ the ram to push the roof up with more force and evenly. Then push the floor down. As well. Now rescuers besides. Using them. The cross -- technique. -- proportionate vehicle because of damage what happens if those vehicles say this vehicle. For example was a brand new ball votes they like and acts he. Sixty. -- caller of posts are all filled with the war on steel reinforcements. And your hydraulic Connor. Couldn't cut this -- bodes well we can also use that ram and the cross trending technique of cross training vertically. By stretching the roof up words to remove the patient out of the back the vehicle. Kind of a vertical -- however coming through the rear window opening because we're gonna -- -- vertically. As you can see. The crew setting up the ram to do you notice there have set a base. Across the face of -- -- -- to spread the load out. They're also -- -- the roof up vertically. It. Again cross charming -- nothing more than we're gonna re create we're gonna kind of push the vehicle parked in different directions. To make better space to -- angle -- move patients in the vehicle. But always remember. Need to put heart protection a barrier between -- -- work. Your patience and interior ask -- work. You might need to pull interior trim it for pushing against different parts of the roof because of side curtain airbags and such. But also remember to support the ram because the ram might punch through the vehicle as well -- got to make sure the ram is supported. My name is Dave -- but I'd like to thank you for watching training grants. Thank you Camacho for sponsoring them to be safe out there.
