Chief Robert T. Heath of the Kingston (MA) Fire Department discusses working with outside agencies discusses working with law enforcement.
We're very fortunate in that town. -- that we have a positive working relationship. With our fire and police departments. We work very well together -- we respond to pretty much every scene together. And when the firefighters and police office is get together at the scene -- work towards a common goal. Which is serve the citizens. I am far. A lot of communities have the same type of relationship. With -- police and fire departments. When they respond to calls they should be goal oriented. Why eagle. Okay let's take care of the incident and let's get the -- stabilized. And best serve the citizens. We must also keep in mind. That even though were -- first responders. Firefighters. Police officers. Going to the scene of an emergency. For the same common purpose. Are no rules. Vary dramatically. -- police officer at the scene of an accident varies from that of a firefighter. One of the things that needs to take place. It's mutual respect for those roles. We know each other outside of work. We can carry the respect. It to work. When you pull up at the -- All of fire. The police officers also have a job to do. When the police officers pull up at the scene and an -- They know that the firefighters and he empties also have a job to -- By having that mutual respect and understanding. The job gets done a lot quicker a lot safer. -- -- For quick -- To take into consideration. Might be. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- call for a reason. We have to think of what we got a deal. To get the job done. Work. To get up. Don't just be the red team in the blue team work together. Communicate. If that's -- officer needs something done communicated to the police off if the police officer needs something done communicated to the fire officer. It'll get there. Do -- jobs. Remembering. That the common goal is the same but you do these are different. Do your job. And most importantly. We have to remember. To have. A mutual respect. For one another up. They have that. The job we'll get to. If it's not this way and -- municipality. Or departments. One of the ways in which you can deal with us. Would be to have a fire training officer. Meet with the police and tell them. How you do things and why you do thanks. And then have a police are a -- -- until firefighters how they do things now why they do things. This may not be a stop gap measure but it certainly can help. Another area that you might be able to use to help -- Will be if you have a major incidents. Within your community. To a group -- To a critique between police and fire. Gives you another avenue for people to say why they did something. And why it worked all why it didn't work. Always approached with a positive. And do a critique. Positive nobody likes to be slammed. Additionally. This critique. Should be at all levels of -- fire and police. From the chief offices right on down to the fire fighters and the police officers. Very important that you get the people. There are involved. On the street. Into the critique because they've got something very important it.
