The Oldest Fireman in Philadelphia.

Issue 2 and Volume 1.

The Oldest Fireman in Philadelphia. Samuel Harmstad claims to be the oldest living Fireman in Philadelphia. He is seventysix years old, and says the records show that he joined the old Washington Engine Company, No. 14, on July 3, 1822, and at once began to run to fires, and was active for many years, and was afterwards, when he grew too old for active service, put upon the honorary roll. He detailed many vivid recollections of his life as a Fireman, especially that of the burning of the old court house roof at Sixth and Chestnut Streets, about 1824. He says that there are several other Firemen living whose entry into the service ante-dates his. We would like to know who is the oldest F’ireman in New York City.
