Chicago’s Fire Alarm Service. Mr. John P. Barrett, the efficient Superintendent of the Chicago Fire Alarm Telegraph Department, will, this month, submit his annual report to the Common Council. It will show that great strides have been made in improving the mechanical and other appliances of the Department, so that it is at present almost as near perfection as it can possibly be. The Fire Alarm Sen-ice employs eight men, consisting of one Superintendent, one chief operator, three other operators, and three repairers. These are in turn divided into reliefs, so that there is always a force at work at the Central Station, ready to handle all the alarms that could possibly be sent in. During the past year Supt. Barrett has placed in position over 1,500 new telegraph poles; rebuilt 50 miles of old line; built one hundred miles of new lines; changed all the old fire alarm boxes…
