Chemical Engines. Within the last few years the application of previously well-known chemical combinations has brought into use a new class of fire extinguishing apparatus, known as the chemical engine, and there is a possibility that, like many other new inventions, they may be credited with more than actual experience, covering a term of years, will show is due them. The writer’s attention was attracted by a paragraph in a recent issue of a prominent daily paper, stating in substance that a certain large village, entirely without apparatus for the extinguishment of fire, had made an appropriation for the purchase of such apparatus, and that the Committee having the matter in charge, recommended the purchase of a chemical engine instead of a steamer, they basing their recommendation upon the stated fact that the water supply of the village was inadequate to supply a steamer, and that an enlargement of the…
