Remarkable Fires The Albany Press has compiled a list of remarkable fires which have occurred during the past century, or from the year 1776 to 1850. It will be seen from the extracts given below that the loss of life and property by this most terrible and destructive element is something frightful to contemplate: 1776, Jan. 1, Norfolk, Va., burned by Lord Dunmore, loss, $1,500,000. 1776, Sept. 20, New York, 500 buildings destroyed. 1777, June 6, Constantinople, Turkey, 2,000 1878, July 17, Constantinople, Turkey, 2,500 houses, 100 lives lost, loss, $13,500,000. houses destroyed, loss, $6,800,000.
