Random Sparks. —Chicago owes the Police and Firemen’s Benevolent Fund $4,786. —It required $67,000 to pay the Chicago Police and Firemen for December. —In Richmond, Va., there were 60 fires, involving a loss of $15,090, during the year 1877. —Independence Hall, in Philadelphia, came near being destroyed by fire last week in consequence of a dangerous defect in the heater. —There were 46 fires at Portland, Me., during 1877, involving a total loss of $19,963, upon which there were insurances aggregating $19,298. —In Brooklyn, N. Y., during the month of December there were 45 fires, involving a loss of $^4,265, upon which there were insurances amounting to $132,250. —Chief-Engineer .A. J. Green, of Fitchburg, Mass., reports fourteen fires in that city during the past year, the loss occasioned thereby being $7,425, with insurance amounting to $3,275. —The Chicago Aldermen have rejected an ordinance which was designed to make all places…
