Boiler Explosions. An intelligent estimate places the number of steam boilers now in use in New York city at nearly 3,000, most of them in thickly settled neighborhoods, or manufacturing establishments, hotels, etc., where explosion is liable to result in a fearful destruction ot human life, to say nothing of property. The number in use and similarly situated in other cities and manufacturing towns is proportionately great. From the records kept in the office of the Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company, it appears that within ten years there have been 848 boiler explosions in this country, by which 1,768 persons have been killed, and 1,904 more or less wounded. This is a terrible record of disasters that were wholly preventable. We say preventable, for it is unquestionably a fact that if steam boilers are properly cared for, there can be no explosions.
