Miscellann. The London Fire Department. Capt. Shaw, Superintendent of the London Fire Brigade, in his annual report for 1877, recently submitted, says : “ The number of calls for fires or supposed fires received during the year has been 1,078. Of these 106 were false alarms, 69 chimney fires, and 1,653 were calls for fires, of which 159 resulted in serious damage and 1,374 in slight damage. These calls for fires or supposed fires involved the turning out of firemen, fire-engines, fire-escapes, and coachmen. The fires of 1877, as compared with those of 1876, showed a decrease of 99, and compared with the average of the last 10 years, there was a decrease ef 87. The proportion of serious to slight losses, 159 to 1,374, showed that success in reducing losses during 1877 had been about the same as in the previous year. The number of fires in the metropolis…
