Thanksgiving. Thursday of this week was very generally observed throughout the country as a day of thanksgiving. The custom has been growing of late, of observing a uniform day of thanksgiving, instead of different days designated by Governors of the various States, President Lincoln inaugurated this practice during the war, by appointing a day of National Thanksgiving for the successes which had crowned the efforts of our armies in the field. This happy precedent has been generally followed since, so that Thanksgiving day has come to be recognized as a National legal holiday, instead of a State observance merely, as formerly. As the day has come to be more universally observed, there has grown up a more marked divergence from the text of the Proclamation, which designates the day for Thanksgiving ceremonies. These formal State documents invariably request all good citizens to devote the day to thankgiving and prayer. It…
