Newark Department. Commenting upon an article in the JOURNAL relative to the tax on insurance companies for the benefit of Firemen’s Benevolent Funds, the Newark Call says: “The Newark Fire Department derives a revenue from foreign insurance companies, but not as much as they are entitled to. Last winter a bill was passed which compelled these agents to give bonds, and also authorizing the Treasurer of the fund to examine the books of these agents and to collect the tax imposed. But it failed becoming a law for the want of the Governor’s signature, and it is the opinion of many of our Firemen that some State officials and insurance agents deceived the Governor. This same bill contained many points of great interest not only to our Department, but to all others throughout the State, and the wonder Is why they did not make themselves heard during the late election…
