TOPICS OF THE DAY THE Newark Councilmen have concluded not to reduce the pay of Firemen. When the Mayor vetoed the reduction-of-salaries ordinance the Council passed another, leaving the pay of the Firemen as it was, but cutting down the officers somewhat, and decapitating 34 policemen. It remains to be seen whether the Mayor will approve this action. WE receive many requests to buy various things for Fire Companies. While we are always glad to attend to any orders sent us, we wish it distinctly understood that we want no profit from either buyer or seller. We are not in the fire-supply business, and enter into no competition with manufacturers. When we receive orders we send them to the manufacturer whom we think will fill them quickest according to their terms.
