CITY & VICINITY. NEW YORK DEPARTMENT. A FIRE IN PEARL STREET. About 8.30 o’clock Sunday evening, a telegraph messenger boy named Jeremiah Haley, discovered fire in the double brick building Nos. 538 and 540 Pearl street. He immediately ran to the nearest signal box and gave the alarm. When the Firemen arrived, the flames were bursting from all the windows on the fourth floor. Other alarms were turned in, and within ten minutes from the first signal, the whole block in which the building is situated was surrounded with Engines and Hook and Ladder Trucks. The Firemen worked perseveringly, and prevented the fire from reaching the floors below, but despite all their efforts the. flames communicated to the fifth floors. Lines of hose were carried to the roofs of adjoining buildings, and the fire was fought from both above and below. By 9 o’ciock the fire was under control, and…
