APPLIANCE FOR OPENING DOORS. In these days of the scientific handling of fires, it has become a highly important consideration to do as little damage to property as possible in saving it from fire, by water or otherwise. The invention of the relief valve is an important step in this direction. There are other appliances almost equally necessary to secure this result. It is frequently necessary to break in doors, often containing valuable plate glass; the old method was to “bust it.” More civilized Firemanship, however, demands that it should be saved if possible. The above cut illustrates an instrument which is carried on all the Hook and Ladder apparatus of the Detroit Fire Department. It is so cheap and simple that it should find a place in every Department in place of the axe and battering ram. It is very powerful and the strongest door cannot refuse to yield.…
