TOPICS OF THE DAY. THE Fire Chiefs’ Convention opened at Cincinnati on Tuesday with a large attendance. The proceedings, it is telegraphed, have been full of interest, the discussions partaking of a practical nature. The Convention will not adjourn until after this issue of THE JOURNAL will have passed through the press. A full report will, therefore, be reserved for next week. We give the first day’s proceedings this week. AT the soiree of the Society of Chemical Industry at Owens College, recently, a new theory of combustion was practically illustrated by Mr. Thomas Fletcher, of Warrington, the results being so totally unexpected that many present would, and in fact did, go away with the impression that some deception was being practiced.
