TOPICS OF THE DAY. ON Monday last a still in the distillery of Gibson & Co., on the Monongahela river, above Pittsburgh, exploded, setting fire to the premises. The loss by fire and the destruction of whisky is estimated at $500,000. Is this a blessing to the community or otherwise? WILLIAM HALE, an old member of the Kansas City, Mo., Fire Department died a few days ago. Deceased was a brother of Chief George C. Hale, and was engineer of Steamer Company No. 3, for four years. His funeral was largely attended and was a worthy tribute to the good Fireman. Chief Hale was shown much sympathy by those who helped to do honor to all that remained of his departed brother. THE N.
