TOPICS OF THE DAY IN the statement of large fires in January, which we copied from the Commercial Bulletin, Chicago was charged with one fire whereby a loss of $100,000 was incurred. Chief Swenie naturally objects to being held accountable for a loss that did not occur in his bailiwick. The fire referred to occurred in the town of Lake, outside the corporate limits of Chicago, and not included in the property of that city. Chief Swenie sent three steamers to assist his neighbors on that occasion, but had no responsibility either in the management of the fire or for the loss incurred. As a matter of fact, Chicago had 122 fires in January with a total loss of only $48,000. Will the Commercial Bulletin please make a note of the above?
