Denis Joseph Swenie, Fire Marshal and Chief of Brigade, hails from “Bonny Scotland,” where he first saw the light in the City of Glasgow, July 30, 1834, one year (lacking a few days) after the city which he has served so faithfully for over thirty-four years, was incorporated a town, with a population of 550. He received a good education in his native city, where he remained the first fifteen years of his life. Wishing, like thousands of other boys at that age, to see something of the world, he obtained passage on a sailing vessel and bid farewell to the land of Scott and Burns on May 26, 1849.
