CITY & VICINITY. President Van Cott of the New York Fire Department is credited with saying that eight recent fires had been caused by the unlawful use of fire-crackers. A committee from the New York Board of Fire Underwriters had a conference with Mayor Low of Brooklyn on Thursday of last week, and urged an appropriation in the next city tax levy for the purchase and equipment of the fire boat to protect the water front of Brooklyn. Mayor Low said the city of New York owned the water front of Brooklyn, and thought the authorities of that city should provide the boat, but after some discussion it was finally agreed to insert the sum of $20,000 in the tax levy for the boat.
