CITY & VICINITY. As we announced last week, on Monday afternoon the New York Board of Fire Commissioners boarded the fire-boat Zophar Mills at the foot of Morton street to steam over to Englewood for the purpose of witnessing the trials arranged of the various devices for throwing life lines. Several of the members of the New York Department have invented apparatus for projecting life lines, and the fire commissioners have offered a reward of promotion to the member that invents the best throwing device. On the fire-boat, accompanying the commissioners, were Chief Shay, Assistant Chief Bonner, Chief of Battalion Purroy, and a number of others, including the six inventors. The party landed at a point on the Hudson just opposite Spuyten Duyvil, where the lines could be thrown up against the Palisades.
