TOPICS OF THE DAY. During the floods the Peabody (Mass.) firemen have been compelled to perform an extra amount of work, in addition to their extra duties. Detachments from nearly all the companies volunteered their services in keeping culverts clear and pumping out cellars. THE fraternity of fire chiefs will regret to learn of the death of Law S. Gibson, chief of the Rochester (N. Y.) Fire Department. Chief Gibson was an enthusiastic fireman. He had been connected twenty years with the Rochester department, and was warmly esteemed for his manly qualities. He was a member of the National Association of Fire Chiefs, took an active part, as well as interest, in the proceedings of the association conventions, and was highly esteemed by his brother chiefs.
